REUTERS/Mike Blake/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 4 (Reuters) - Canadian technology company BlackBerry (BB.TO), said on Wednesday it would separate its Internet of Things (IoT) and cybersecurity business units and target a subsidiary initial public offering for the IoT business next fiscal year. BlackBerry joins a number of companies that have split their units in recent years, favoring a leaner corporate structure to help investors better evaluate their separate businesses. BlackBerry said in May it would consider strategic options for its portfolio of businesses that could include the possible separation of one or more of its businesses. Last year, it pulled the plug on its smartphones business and has since been trying to sell its legacy patents related to its mobile devices. IoT revenue was $49 million, while cybersecurity revenue came in at $79 million.

The procurement team, responsible for sourcing and pricing the services the company buys, can introduce significant barriers to enterprise startups. Sellers must navigate a thicket of data concerns and increasing price sensitivities, among other issues, with procurement teams that may have little familiarity with AI. Enterprise software deals are taking longer to close compared with last year, per a September survey from New York-based SAAS financing startup Capchase. "That's leading procurement teams to ask sellers 'what works here, tell me where I could have unanticipated outcomes?'" Nemeth said procurement teams want to be educated and help see deals through.

This post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. In today's big story, we're looking at how a Google loophole brings advertisements for illegal drugs hosted on defaced government websites to the top of search results. Previously, that wasn't an issue since these web pages never appeared in Google searches because website owners restricted Google from indexing them. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe result is people using internal search functions to create webpages advertising drugs on websites viewed as trustworthy by Google. There’s no substitute for dessert at The Lemon Ice King of Corona afterward, I’m afraid. Another dish I’d like to make this weekend: Ali Slagle’s Old Bay grilled shrimp. Ali adds a little bit of baking soda to the seasoning, which helps keep the shrimp snappy while they cook, and then tops everything with lemon zest, parsley and garlic. I think that’d be a fine Sunday lunch, in advance of a nap in front of a fan. There are many thousands more recipes to cook this weekend waiting for you on New York Times Cooking.

If there’s anything more American than apple pie, it’s Coca-Cola, Levi’s and Harley-Davidson. No wonder so many of the latest movies tell the stories behind these beloved brands. The 1980s and ’90s, for one thing, which in these movies looks like a relative golden era. And in these movies, it was a time when the right nerd/ne’er-do-well/eccentric with the right combination of charm, chutzpah and ingenuity could make his or her dream come true. July 13 (Reuters) - Juniper Networks (JNPR.N) forecast third-quarter revenue below market estimates on Thursday on lower spending by cloud computing clients in a turbulent economy, sending the shares of the networking equipment maker down 6% after the bell. Cloud service providers have been cutting back on orders for infrastructure equipment such as routers and switches in a blow for companies like Juniper Networks due to an overall drop in tech spending. Juniper, which also provides network management software for companies like AT&T, Seagate and BlackBerry, said it expects revenue of about $1.38 billion, plus or minus $50 million, in the third quarter. It forecast adjusted earnings per share of 54 cents, plus or minus 5 cents, which was below expectations of 62 cents. On an adjusted basis, the company earned 58 cents per share, compared with estimates of 55 cents.

But the release of half a dozen movies about brands — Barbie, Flamin' Hot Cheetos, Tetris, Nike Air, BlackBerry, and Beanie Babies — in six months isn't just the result of Hollywood groupthink and coincidence. But just as these brand-centric movies ring hollow, so does the gig economy they're catering to. While the plot isn't about the making of Barbie, Barbie and Ken do step outside Barbie Land to peek behind the curtains of their creation.) As more companies look to gig workers to replace full-time jobs, more workers take up gig work. As the economy continues to emphasize the importance of self-branding through gig work, brand movies will continue to resonate.

One report, written by the Federal Reserve's own economists, left me with not exactly an upbeat outlook. Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell testifies during a House Committee on Financial Services hearing, Wednesday, July 18, 2018, Capitol Hill in Washington. That is, more than a third of companies could default in the coming months, thanks to tightening monetary policy. Basically, they are predicting that companies feel pain in times of policy tightening, especially those with weaker balance sheets to begin with. Investors should monitor these bearish signals to stay ahead of a potential sell-off in the stock market.
